Big Shots in Budapest

If you happen to be in the Hungarian capital this summer, you will have the chance to dive into the world of two iconic photographers of the 20th century, presented side by side in Budapest's alley for photographic museums.

2017. július 10. - Fényerő Fotóblog

Strolling down Nagymező utca in Budapest's 6th district, you will encounter the well-known names of Robert Capa and Elliott Erwitt. To begin with, there are two parallel exhibitions from the photographs of Erwitt, one in the Capa Center for Contemporary Photography and one in Mai Manó House. While the former is a wide retrospective from the products of 50 years, including some well-known and iconic photographs, the latter is a rare compendium of pictures taken in 1964 during Erwitt's visit in Hungary, which he made as part of an assignment in Eastern European countries. Capa Center also shows a selection from photographs by the legendary reporter Robert Capa in an exhibition which runs until the end of the year.

"You can find picture anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them" - Elliott Erwitt

Capa Center features works by Erwitt from the 1950s to the 2000s. The thematically organised exhibition lets prevail the humor, irony, everyday poesy and, sometimes, melancholy that is characteristic to Erwitt's pictures.

Visual humor is a recurring theme of Erwitt's photographs, let it be an abstraction of images, a series of sequential photographs or simply an observation of the human nature.

Humor is also the word that is most often cited in connection with Erwitt. But humor is for him not a joke: even his irony is filled with humanism and love.

It's about reacting to what you see, hopefully without preconception. You can find pictures anywhere. It's simply a matter of noticing things and organizing them. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity and the human comedy ”, said Erwitt, who is member of the same Magnum agency, whose founders included Robert Capa.
Along with many of the the well-known and iconic pictures, like dog pictures, captures on seasides and in museums, and the 'Kitchen Debate', the exhibition in Capa Center features some less-known colour photographs, like the one that was made on the set of The Misfits. Other color photos include a portrait of John F. Kennedy and a capture about the Obamas' on an inauguration ball.
Only a short walk down on Nagymező street, on the other side of Andrássy boulevard, is the elder of the two photographic institutions, Mai Manó Ház. Here, parallel to the retrospective, a compendium of Erwitt's photographs focuses on his 1964 Hungarian journey. The Magnum photographer took pictures in the countryside and in the capital, in villages and in the luxury Café Gerbaud (called Café Vörösmarty in the communist times) . He was driven by the same humanistic interest and witty attitude while photographing politics and the everyday life in socialist Hungary, like everywhere else. Looking at the half-ready housing complexes, together with the remains of an archaic agrarian society in the countryside the visitor can observe an objective panorama of an era.

A small selection of photographs by Robert Capa is also on show in Capa Center. The curators aimed to bring to the public less-known pictures along with iconic ones. Born in 1913 in Budapest, Robert Capa got to world fame as a war photographer. Reflecting Capa's life and work in a more wider aspect, as a photo reporter, the Budapest exhibition also includes pictures of peace and everyday life, like some from his report on the 1939 Tour de France race.

The exhibits belong to one of the three authentic collections of Capa's oeuvre, known as the Master's Sets. The 937-pieces strong collection belongs to the Hungarian National Museum. Among the some 50 photographs on show there are 18 that have not been exhibited in Hungary before.

Close to the subject: Bruce Davidson's photographs in Vienna's Westlicht

With his photo series about people who live on the verge of American society, Bruce Davidson became one of the iconic figures of street photography. A big retrospective show of his photographic oeuvre is now on display at Vienna's Westlicht Gallery. His series of drifting youngsters (Brooklyn Gang, 1959), the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the residents of the 'Spanish Harlem', living in poverty (East 100th Street, 1966-1968) bring us close to everyday America of the time. Close in the strict sense of the word, as Davidson builds up a close relationship with the subjects of his portraits. Sometimes he is following them with his camera for years. "I wanted to photograph a molecule of this very complex metropolis in which we live. To be there, not to rush along. I became part of the street life" - he said about the East 100th Street project, which he made for two years, with the National Endowment for the Arts.

Davidson is also considered, along with Edward Steichen and Henri Cartier-Bresson, as one of the major figures humanistic photography. His works are not mere documentations of a social shift, a milieu or a subculture. He takes one step closer, in order to get his protagonists really open up for his camera. „You have to have passion, you have to have purpose, and you have to be sensitive for where you are  in history“, he said Austrian public television ORF at the opening of the exhibition. "I have always believed in being close. It is important to be close. So that’s the way I work. That’s the way I am."

A street fotó élő klasszikusa: Bruce Davidson

A társadalom peremén élők életéről készített fotóriportjai az amerikai street fotó egyik élő klasszikusává teszik Bruce Davidsont, akinek a képeiből a bécsi Westlicht Galériában nyílt áttekintő kiállítás ezen a héten. A sodródó fiatalokról (Brooklyn Gang, 1959), az 1960-as évek polgárjogi mozgalmáról és a New York-i “Spanyol Harlem” lakóit sújtó szegénységről (East 100th Street, 1966-1968) készült sorozatai az amerikai hétkönapokhoz visznek közel minket. Része lettem az utcai életnek” – mondta az East 100th Street sorozatról, amelyet két éven át készített, a National Endowment for the Arts ösztöndíjával.

Above the rooftops of Paris

On the photos of Alain Cornu one can’t see the crowded boulevards, nor the charmant cafés of Paris, and even the monuments attracting millions of tourists get a marginal role. And yet, these pictures give us a typical view of the French metropolis: the endless landscape of the rooftops of Paris.

On his series of pictures Sur Paris, human presence is signalled by the lighting windows that appear among the typical zink roofs, the antennas, the firewalls, the waterspouts of the medieval churches and the chimneys. „I am interested in the aesthetics of the everyday life. I am not a voyeur. I am an observer, I imagine all these people who go home in the evening. It is much more about the imagination, than what we can see.“

The basic elements of his compositions are strange angles in the soft lights before nightfall and the city’s lights. „This is the time, when we are get close to imagination and intimacy“ – he sais. His pictures are made by analogue technique and long exposition time.

Vivian Maier a Howard Greenberg Galériában

A Michel Serfaty rabbi vezette Judeo-Muzulmán Barátság Franciaországi Társasága, Montreuil (Párizs), 2016. szeptember © Patrick Zachmann | Magnum Photos

Centre Pompidou shows previously unpublished photos by Josef Koudelka

Pompidou Centre Paris features previously unseen photographs by legendary Czech photographer Josef Koudelka in one of his exhibitions among the numerous programmes this year, which marks its 40th anniversary.

Koudelka, who came to world fame with his photographs made during the 1968 invasion by the troops of Warsaw Pact countries, left his home country Czechoslovakia in 1970. After that, he has been almost constantly on the move for decades, with a single backpack, as a modern nomad.

He slept open-air while photographing gipsy communities around Europe, and in the intervals, he has found a temporary home at his friends’ place in Paris and London, or took one-night stands at the Paris bureaus of Magnum photo agency, sleeping in a sleeping bag on the floor.

The exhibition La Fabrique d’Exiles (Making of the Exiles) includes works from this period that previously have not been showed to he public. Some of the prints have been made specially for this occasion.

Also for the first time, the show features self-portraits by Koudelka he made during his years of his constant wandering, as well as contact sheets. All in all, visitors can get an insight into the making of his Exiles series.

The exhibition at Centre Pompidou is his first in Paris since the 1988 introduction of the series.

In the 1970s and 1980 he criss-crossed Europe for his projects. His Exiles photographs are testimonies not only on their subjects, but also on Koudelka’s love for and pursuit of freedom. 'I photograph only something that has to do with me, and I never did anything that I did not want to do’ – he said The Guardian in a 2008 interview.

Exiles was also published in a photobook, first in 1988 and in 2014 as an extended edition. ‚Koudelka’s unsentimental, stark, brooding, intensely human imagery reflect his own spirit, the very essence of an exile who is at home wherever his wandering body finds haven in the night“ - wrote Cornell Capa on this book.

The next big shot of Pompidou Centre for the lovers of photography will be an exhibitions from the oeuvre of Walker Evans, to be seen from the 26th of April.
