Visions of War and Peace – Photos by Robert Capa

2016. július 22. - Fényerő Fotóblog

This exhibition may belong to the less-advertised this summer in Budapest, still, it is compulsory for the lovers of photography in Budapest. The exhibition Images of War and Peace in Mai Manó House – House of Hungarian Photographers has opened on 19th July and is on view until 18th September.

The exhibition encompasses 48 vintage copies of photographs from the Hungarian-born, legendary war photographer Robert Capa (all of them belonging to collection of the the Hungarian National Museum), as well as 16 pieces from the so-called Master Selection, which was compiled by Robert Capa’s brother Cornell Capa and the historian Richard Whelan between 1990 and 1992.

Robert Capa was documenting almost every major turn of the 20th century: the Spanish civil war, the European war fields in WW2, and at the beginnings of a new world order in China, in the Soviet Union and in the Middle-East. Along with iconic pictures of the 20th century the exhibition at Mai Manó House features less-known parts of Capa’s work. The horrors of war and the moments of peace can be seen here next to each other, and sometimes even in the same picture.

Visitors who wish to know more about the pictures on show may feel a lack of explaining texts. A 50-minutes documentation (Close to Capa, directed by Attila Kékesi) substitutes for them.
